John J. Cotter, M.A., L.M.F.T.

John grew up on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, the son of Irish immigrant parents.  Like most, John had no idea about which career path he would take.  Out of high school, he enlisted and served six years in the Navy.  From there he attended San Diego State University and graduated with a degree in Business Administration.  His journey led him into a variety of fields including retail and restaurant management, shipyards, construction and utility companies.  John understands the struggles, the uncertainty and the pain of running into dead ends and brick walls when trying to find life’s purpose.   He continued his path of trial and error; but through prayer and guidance, returned to college and completed a program in Alcohol and Other Drug Studies. From there, he began working as a substance abuse counselor in Southern California.  Realizing working with people was truly his calling in life; he continued his formal education, completing a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from National University San Diego.

He began working with teens and their families in an adolescent day treatment program.  John was licensed in Southern California and is currently licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist here in Virginia.  John enjoys seeing men grow stronger as they become the man God intended them to be. Often men feel alone; under the weight of the world.  Having been down that road, John understands the incredible challenges men face in today's world.  He can be that trusted coach and guide to being a better man and having healthier relationships.

Since being in Virginia, John has worked extensively with women, provided counsel and healing; successfully helping those with some of the most challenging mental health issues with which women struggle.  It is so rewarding to see peace and joy come to the lives of those that have been without hope.

The treatment issues for women and men include depression, anxiety, addictions, post-traumatic stress personality disorders, panic disorders, existential angst, communication issues, and relational problems.  John provides direction and help with the complexities of step-families.  He assists members of the two unique families to understand how to work to bring more unity to this "new" combinations of family members.

He believes much emotional suffering has its origins in the spiritual dimension.   Just as relationships with parents, children, spouses, friends and siblings can affect our emotional health, a healthy relationship with God is crucial for psychological well-being.  John has this wonderful gift of coming along side those that are hurting; creating a safe place to encourage people to begin the journey of becoming real and genuine.  The famous words of St. Francis of Assisi resonate and echo deep within John’s soul, “Lord make me an instrument of thy peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love . .  .”.
